Hygge is defined as a quality of coziness and comfortable warmth that creates a feeling of contentment or well-being. Hygge is a Danish word and is considered a defining characteristic of Danish culture. In Denmark, achieving hygge means sitting next to a fire and reading a good book while wearing handknit socks. Or having some yummy hot cocoa and cake while listening to some Agnes Obel by candlelight.
The Danes call it hygge. We call it self-care. Either way it is all the same. Just this past weekend we turned the clock back. It is getting darker earlier. How will you choose to spend your time? On your device? Scrolling through social media? I invite you to take a lesson from the Danish people and get your hygge on. If even just for one evening. What makes you feel cozy? Start a fire in your fireplace (or turn you gas on one) and listen to a book on Audible. Make a pot of tea and get cozy underneath a blanket. Practicing self-care takes discipline but it’s so worth it. You need to invest in yourself. Give your mind a rest. Be mindful. Take in your surroundings. Listen to the noises around you. Take time to be quiet and relax.
