It’s that time of year…

It’s that time of year when we set new resolutions and attempt to start healthier routines. Instead of creating lofty goals for yourself, may we suggest you set some smaller goals? I’m sure you’ve heard the statistics about how many gyms get new clients at the start of the year but by Valentine’s Day many of the new members are no longer attending. That could be because when we set goals and we don’t meet the standard, we decide that forgoing the entire goal is better than only achieving a portion of our expectation. What we really should ask ourselves is whether our expectations are too high. Start out small. Rather than saying you will walk 10,000 steps every single day, say you will start with two days a week and build up from there. I guarantee once you meet the mark of an achievable goal, you will continue to work toward results.

What are your goals this year? I’ve asked many of my clients to talk to me about achievable goals. Notice the key word is achievable? These are realistic, measurable goals that you can attain. Above all I also ask my clients to give themselves grace. We all get sick sometimes. We all have perfectly acceptable reasons as to why we must ease the gas on achieving a goal. Rather than beat yourself up and give up altogether, accept you’re human and get back on track at a later date. Ask a friend to hold you accountable to this. Write your goal(s) down. Treat yourself on occasion. For more information or to schedule a session with Mending Hearts Counseling, call 970-545-1111.
